Description

What It Is & Why It’s Prescribed

Augmentin Duo 625 mg blends amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, which is a class of antibiotics that is a penicillin-class antibiotic, and clavulanic acid, which shields amoxicillin from bacteria-related enzymes that can make it inactive. Together, they can effectively treat ailments that amoxicillin alone may not be able to clear on its own, such as sinusitis or pneumonia, and ear infections. They also treat skin or soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and infections of bites.

How It Works

  • Amoxicillin causes an attack and kills the bacteria that are infected.
  • Clavulanic acid blocks β-lactamase enzymes made by certain bacteria. This allows amoxicillin to be effective.

When & How to Take It

Adult Usage (including teens ≥12 years)

  • Standard dose: A tablet of 625 mg every day (every twelve hours) in conjunction with food for moderate or mild infections.
  • Severe infections: More powerful doses, like 875 mg per 12 hours, can be taken (though it isn’t the usual Duo 625 strength).

Pediatric Use

  • Children younger than 2 years are typically not provided with tablets.
  • Dosage levels for children in the early years (by weight) can vary between 25 mg/kg/day (lower dose) up to 45 mg/kg/day (higher dosage). Divided into two doses per 12 hours, according to intensity.

Kidney or Liver Impairment

  • No adjustments are required if renal function (CrCl) is greater than 30mL/min.
  • Do not utilize Duo 625 when CrCl is less than 30mL/min. Choose less strength.
  • Take care when handling the case of liver disease, with frequent monitoring.

Duration of Treatment

  • The duration of treatment varies according to the kind, but typically five to ten days, and sometimes as long as 14 days in the case of more severe infections.
  • Do the whole course, even when you feel more comfortable early, to avoid resistance or recrudescence.

Common Side Effects

Mild to Moderate (common)

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach pain or gas
  • Skin rash or itchiness
  • Vaginal yeast infection or candidiasis
  • Oral thrush or diaper rash in infants

Less Common but Serious

  • C. difficile-related diarrhoea (potentially dangerous)
  • Cholestatic Hepatitis (liver injury) can develop in the weeks following treatment. It’s most often in males who are older or those who have long-term courses (incidence less than 1 per 100,000)
  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome or toxic epidermal Necrolysis (very uncommon skin reaction)
  • Allergic reactions are severe (hives or swelling and breathing difficulties) – Seek emergency aid

Drug Interactions & Cautions

Noted Interactions

  • Probenecid raises amoxicillin levels, but not the clavulanic acid- use at a moderate dose.
  • Allopurinol Co-administration could raise the risk of rash.
  • It could reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
  • Could cause the risk of warfarin (or Acenocoumarol) side effects. It is recommended to monitor INR levels if it is administered in conjunction with warfarin.
  • It could alter the levels of mycophenolate mofetil, which can affect the immunosuppressant effect.
  • Penicillins could decrease methotrexate excretion and may increase the risk of toxicity.

Precautions

  • Beware if you are sensitive to cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics.
  • Do not recommend for nursing or while pregnant. Discuss with your doctor in the event of a need for.
  • Take care when using this product for liver or renal diseases, with monitoring by a lab when indicated.

Monitoring & What to Watch For

  • If the diarrhoea becomes severe, bleeding, persistent, or bloody when you stop taking medication, report it to your doctor right away.
  • Be on the lookout for signs of jaundice, dark bleeding, and fatigue (possible injuries to the liver).
  • Be sure to report any swelling or rash — especially that involving your throat, face, or mouth.
