What is Hydralazine?
Hydralazine is an effective vasodilator medication that is mostly employed for treating high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. It does this by easing the muscles of the blood vessels’ walls and arterioles. This reduces blood pressure and increases circulation.
Hydralzin 20 mg is the tablet version of 20 mg of Hydralazine.
Mechanism of Action
Hydralazine works directly on the smooth muscle in blood vessels that carry blood, causing vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels). The result is:
- A reduced peripheral resistance to vascular disease
- Lowered blood pressure
- A decrease in the afterload of the heart and improved cardiac output for heart-failing patients
As opposed to many other antihypertensives, hydralazine is primarily used to dilate arterioles, not veins. It primarily lowers the afterload and not so much as preload.
Indications
Hydralazine is prescribed for:
- Hypertension
Particularly in situations those are resistant to other medicines or in situations where an immediate blood pressure decrease is necessary. - Heart Failure
Sometimes, it is combined with nitrates, which can reduce postload and preload. This can improve conditions and ultimately longevity. - Hypertensive Emergencies and Pregnancy-Related Hypertension
In rare cases, hypertension is severe in pregnancy (e.g., Preeclampsia).
Dosage and Administration
- Typical starting dose: 10-25 mg oral dose every 2 to 3 days.
- Maintenance dose: 40-200 mg daily, divided dosages.
- Dosage is adjusted according to responses to blood pressure as well as tolerance.
- Tablets can be consumed in combination with and without meals.
Note: Dosage adjustments are required in patients suffering from problems with the liver or kidneys.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects:
Serious Side Effects:
- Lupus-like syndrome
the symptoms include muscle pain and joint pain or fever, as well as rash, particularly after prolonged usage and large dosages. - Hypotension
the excessive lowering of blood pressure could lead to fainting or even falls. - Fluid retention
The heart condition could get worse if it is not treated properly.
Precautions and Contraindications
- Take care when taking this medicine for patients suffering from coronary artery disease (risk of reflex tachycardia).
- Monitoring regularly is essential in detecting signs of lupus or lupus-like syndrome.
- Beware of abrupt withdrawal.
- Pregnant women: Hydralazine is commonly used and usually considered safe under the supervision of a medical professional.
- Not recommended for patients who have hypersensitivity to hydralazine.
Drug Interactions
- It may increase the effects of antihypertensive medications in combination with other drugs.
- Beta-blockers can be prescribed to reduce the effects of reflex tachycardia.
- The effectiveness of hydralazine.
- Use caution when taking other vasodilators or medications that alter the heart rate.
Summary
Hydralzin 20 mg (Hydralazine) is a powerful vasodilator to treat hypertension and heart failure through relaxing the smooth muscles of the arterial wall and decreasing blood pressure. Though generally well-tolerated, the drug requires cautious dosing and surveillance to prevent side reactions such as lupus-like syndrome or hypertension that is excessive hypertension. It is still a useful treatment in a variety of clinical situations that include resistant hypertension as well as pregnancy-related hypertension.
