Introduction
Cefix 100mg is a supplement to Cefixime. Cefixime is an antibiotic of the third generation. Cefixime can be used to treat many bacterial diseases by limiting the growth of bacteria.
What is Cefixime?
Cefixime is an antibiotic with a broad spectrum that belongs to the class of cephalosporins. It acts by interfering with the creation of the cell wall in a bacterium, which ultimately leads to the bacteria to end up dying. Due to its actions, Cefixime is effective against several Gram-positive as well as Gram-negative bacteria.
Indications: When is Cefix Used?
Cefix 100mg is a prescription medication to treat conditions such as:
- Respiratory tract infections: Bronchitis, pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis.
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs).
- Ear infections (otitis media).
- Gonorrhea (certain uncomplicated cases).
- Other illnesses result from bacteria.
How Does Cefixime Work?
Cefixime is a protein that binds specific protein molecules known as penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) within the cell walls of bacterial cells. It blocks the last process of cell wall synthesis. This weakens the cell wall, causing bacteria to explode (lysis) and causing the death of the bacterium.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage for both children and adults of 12 years of age varies according to the condition, but typically can range from 100 to 400 mg a day in the form of one or two. Examples:
- 100 mg twice daily, or
- 200 mg once a day (especially for extended-release formulas).
Doses for children are generally determined based on weight.
Cefixime tablets must be swallowed whole, along with water. They can be taken either with or without food.
Common Side Effects
Patients may suffer from side effects, such as:
Most of the side effects are not serious and disappear after discontinuing the medicine.
Serious Side Effects and Precautions
The risk of serious adverse side effects is extremely low; however, they could be a result of:
- Allergic reactions that include anaphylaxis (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
- Severe diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile infection (antibiotic-associated colitis)
- Blood disorders (very rare)
- Liver function abnormalities
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins (cross-reactivity can occur)
- Severe allergic reactions to similar antibiotics
Drug Interactions
- Antacids and other supplements that contain iron and zinc can reduce absorption when taken together.
- Probenecid increases blood levels of Cefixime by reducing clearance from the kidneys.
- Other antibiotics could interact with other antibiotics and impact bacterial coverage, or even toxicity.
Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
- Cefixime is typically considered safe in pregnancy (Category B).
- It can be found in breast milk in very small quantities, is generally safe, but always be sure to talk with a physician before using.
What to Do If You Miss a Dose
You should take the dose missed immediately after you can remember. If you are near the date for your next dose, don’t miss the dose you missed and proceed the same way as normal. Avoid double doses.
Storage
Keep Cefixime tablets at room temperature, away from the heat and moisture. Be sure to keep them out of the reach of young children.
